One hen, named Dorothy, roosts in the back corner of the carport, on a coil of rope on a shelf behind a bicycle. After dark, I put on my old coat, step around the bike, grab her left wing, pull her out and carry her to the henhouse. She is warm and fluffy, and she almost purrs in a deep rumbling cluck that I can feel in my hands. Then I open the door of the dark henhouse and set her inside, where the other hens scold her in quiet annoyance from the roost. They sound like us, when Paul and I just have fallen asleep and the college kid who was up late, studying upstairs, decides to make a quesadilla for a snack. Every bump and slam carries into the bedroom because it is an old house, the fir beams all interconnected somehow, and creaking floors and clanked skillets reverberate everywhere. Hoping to remedy this, we are redoing our tiny bedroom, borrowing a few square feet from the office and adding insulation on the wall next to the kitchen.
Five of our six children are in college, and the sixth tutors at a university overseas. We didn't plan or particularly encourage this, but, as our oldest son said, "If you sack seed for nine summers you're motivated to go to college so you never have to sack seed again. "Trust me," I said. Our first Parsonage Unwrapped of the year dives into our drama archives to look at Brontë adaptations, and no doubt Ann Dinsdale, our principal curator, will share a few secrets about behind-the-scenes activity on the set of To Walk Invisible. Alongside these favourites are new Meet the Maker evenings for the spring/summer months and brand new Brontë Treasures sessions, which offer a unique opportunity to go beyond the security cord into the Parsonage Library for a close-up viewing of some of the collection items not on display. During these special hour-long sessions, a member of our curatorial team will share facts and stories about a number of carefully-selected objects, offering a specialist insight into the lives and works of the Brontës. Fascinating and moving, Brontë Treasures is a perfect gift for a Brontë fan, so if you're stuck for a Valentines or Mother's Day gift, this is one which will make someone very happy. uk/whats-on. The Gospel Express Prison Crusade was, for us, different this year than any other. We have never experienced the amount of unrest, tension, and corruption that we saw firsthand in the prisons this year. It is quite understandable that as our culture gets worse and worse, and continues to slide further away from godliness, that the effects will be seen everywhere in the world, prisons included. But witnessing that transition, and seeing the change that occurred even in a year, was very sobering. We have no idea how much longer we may have the opportunity to be allowed ministry of this kind, and that really hit me this year more than ever as we saw all the change that has been taking place. Sadly the entire five days went by with literally only several pictures taken. Above, was our "bus pizza party" with fellow singers, the last night of the crusade. Our services were during the day, around noon/early afternoon this year, which meant that the days were full but the evenings were usually free. It was a totally different schedule from our normal music schedule but it was really good. We were blessed by the morning worship sessions with our "hub" group in Sumter, and the opportunity t interact with the other teams, evangelists, and volunteers. .
